This study found that hospital–physician integration was associated with higher-intensity healthcare use among patients with multiple chronic conditions. After physicians became integrated with hospitals, patients were more likely to receive care in hospital outpatient settings and incur higher healthcare spending, without clear evidence of improved health outcomes. The findings suggest that consolidation between hospitals and physician practices may increase healthcare utilization and costs for medically complex patients.
