MAINE HEALTH DATA ORGANIZATION RELEASES AN UPDATED VERSION OF ITS HEALTH CARE QUALITY AND COST COMPARISON WEBSITE
Augusta, Maine, December 10, 2019 -- The Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) has released version 8.0 of its healthcare transparency website, www.CompareMaine.org.
Consumers are using CompareMaine to compare the average payment to providers (which includes both the average of what the insurance company pays and what the individual pays out of pocket for the specific procedure) for over 240 medical procedures at more than 200 healthcare facilities in the state. Consumers can also compare quality ratings on how hospitals are doing at keeping their patients safe from risks such as infections and falls. The top healthcare procedures that consumers are looking at on CompareMaine include: Colonoscopy, Knee and Hip Replacements, Childbirth, MRI’s and Gallbladder removal.
“Maine people know that health care saves lives, but many are struggling to find the most affordable, high-quality care in a complicated health care system,” said Governor Janet Mills. “With CompareMaine, people across our state can identify their procedure, evaluate the differing prices, and make a decision that best serves their health, their finances, and other considerations. That data and transparency helps to ensure that every Maine person has the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their care.”
“Transparency is an essential component of an efficient and effective health care system,” said Dr. Neil Korsen, Chair of the MHDO Board of Directors.” The data on CompareMaine provides consumers with information on the average costs of many of the most common and expensive health care procedures at facilities across the state. As we all are paying more out of our pocket for our health care, understanding that the costs for the same procedure at a different facility may be thousands of dollars more expensive is important information that we are making available on CompareMaine.
“We are excited about the new information that has been added to the site,” said Karynlee Harrington, Executive Director of MHDO. This release will include information for several new health care procedures including Electrocardiogram, Cervical Biopsy, Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Echocardiogram. We have also incorporated the MHDO Prescription Drug-Retail and Mail-Order Dashboard report into the site which includes information on the top 25 most costly and most utilized prescription drugs in Maine purchased at a retail or mail order pharmacy. Harrington went on to say that Information is critical to decision making and CompareMaine is a tool that provides consumers with information that is otherwise not easily available.
MHDO’s purpose is to create and maintain a useful, objective, reliable and comprehensive health information data warehouse that is used to improve the health of Maine citizens and to promote transparency of the cost and quality of healthcare in the State of Maine by procedure, payer, facility and provider in collaboration with the Maine Quality Forum (MQF).
